Artists In Residence (AIR) Program

Victoria County Creates (VCC) is located in the historic town of Baddeck on the scenic Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia. The area provides a great base for creative growth with rich cultural history and present day beauty to inspire and motivate. The Gallery shop is open year round for craft demonstrations, pop-up studios, workshops and proudly features the work of over seventy local artisans. The Gallery currently showcases textiles, fibre art, paintings, art prints, pottery, woodworking, glass, photography, literature, jewellery and skincare products.

About AIR

The program is aimed towards artists who are interested in increasing the viability of their craft through education in business, product development and sales. To be eligible individuals must aspire to have a full-time career as an artist or craftsperson, have the beginnings of a marketable craft product line, and be able to work without a studio technician.

VCC provides accommodation, studio space and sales space to an AIR. In exchange the AIR agrees to work up to 16 hours a week in the Gallery shop, meet a minimum of 24 hours a week in their studio space and conclude their stay by donating their time and skills to host a community workshop or lecture.

VCC offers residencies for up to two artisans at one time. Studio space is shared amongst the artisans and is located in VCC. The studio environment is a well-lit and spacious room with large individual work tables and storage for each artisan. The studio has also recently grown to include a tabletop pottery wheel, pottery kiln and small selection of pottery supplies.

AIR will stay at a cozy cottage located on the Bras d’Or Lakes 10km from the Gallery. The cottage may accommodate up to two artists at one time. This is a fully furnished space with shared bath, living and full kitchen space and a private bedroom for each artist. Parking for one vehicle per AIR and limited WIFI also available.

AIR guests are welcome from mid June to mid October and the duration of stay ranges from 1 to 4 months depending on the preference indicated on the application. To find out about accommodations during your residency and other requirements, please download the application below.
